Last week, I invited my list to tell me what they are struggling with and what they want from me. There have been some great answers and feedback so far.

This one got my attention, in particular, and I thought I'd share.

" I'd love to learn more about your use of Gumroad vs Thrivecart (I've gotten products from you using each of these)."

These are my thoughts in no specific order or importance.

History: I've been using thrivecart for years and loved it until they sold to new owners at the end of 23. Even when it was great, there were a few things missing from what I really wanted.

membership -

On Gumroad, members can have access to their downloads until the end of their membership period even if they cancel payments. In Thrivecart, they lose access as soon as they cancel.

email list -

It's built in with Gumroad at no additional cost(although, you need more than $100 in sales before you can email more than 100 people on your list. With thrivecart, I was paying for a monthly sub to mailerlite which has to be connected and set up outside of thrivecart for every new product, and the price goes up for every name on your mailing list.

paying affiliates -

Gumroad does the paying for me! They send payments to me and affiliates every Friday - or on a set schedule, anyway.
With thrivecart, I'm required to log in and manually click the buttons to send the money. Not that big a deal, but with my schedule changes this year, it was /is/ getting lost in the shuffle.
at least one of my affiliates didn't get a payment, despite TC showing I had sent it via their system. And, there were a couple of affiliates whose accounts I was told could not receive payment despite them telling me it was the correct PayPal account. So, I had to manually send it from Paypal.
and then, another seller (using TC) contacted me for my correct PayPal addy so she could pay me because the TC system said it couldn't send the payment. I haven't changed anything inside my account, so there's no reason the payments shouldn't go through. And, when I logged in to see the transaction in my affiliate account, it was not there! So, I had no idea there was even a sale on my end (as the affiliate)

Shopping cart or funnel -

Thrivecart only offers the option for building funnels. It's complicated to build - although they made a few changes that actually seemed to make it easier than it used to be.
Gumroad has a way to offer both a cart where multiple products can be added to one checkout, and a way to offer bumps and upsells (funnel).

Sales Pages -

TC has a built-in sales page editor that used to be pretty darn awesome. However, it became really buggy about the same time the new owners took over. Some people said to use the older version of it, but neither version was working for me the last time I logged in to change one of my pages. I spent time to get a really nice-looking page, and it wouldn't save. Or, it looked like it was saved, but when I went back to the page, it was gone.
So, f'ing frustrating!
Gumroad checkout pages are basic and boring. However, I can build sales pages in Canva if I want to, and link to checkout at gumroad. I'm okay with it.

Support

Gumroad's support documents are pretty darn good already, and I've had great luck so far with getting a timely response via email when I've had questions.
TC's support used to be fantastic. I honestly haven't even bothered to ask support about these recent issues. There is a Facebook group where users and TC support staff are active. But, the group is FULL of users sharing their experiences and they are just as full of issues as mine are. There are a lot of folks who are very disgruntled with the system.

Familiarity - why gumroad and not something else like systeme.io?

I used Gumroad when I started out with PlanningAddicts.com. Trust me, I've looked at sooooooo many options over the years. Simplicity is important to me right now. The ability to set up a new product for sale, quickly and without hassle means more to me than anything else.

Drawbacks - right now, the main drawbacks are

1. Lack of a pretty checkout page.

2. Only basic stats.

3. Percentage of sales cost. This is only a drawback if my sales volume goes up, and even then, considering that email and newsletter options are built in, It is probably an even playing field.

Basically, it comes down to this. I don't trust Thrivecart right now.
